Think Tanks - One in 250 Chance to Join - Strong Survive

Add to Technorati Favorites

It is amazing the number of people who wish to join a Think Tank these days. Perhaps it is for resume padding or self-esteem building, but either way a Think Tank must be very careful who they allow to join. As the coordinator for an Online Think Tank, we have many people attempt to join our Internet and Local based Think Tank Groups. The number of resumes we have to go thru is literally a full-time job.

Even once we find some one we think might be a potential candidate a few email conversations generally give away their true abilities to reason, think around the box and/or solve problems. Most simply are not as good as they think they are. Why is this? Why is everyone so full of themselves and feels so entitled to automatically be accepted these days?

Not long ago I talked with a College Admissions Consultant that helped get kids into the finest colleges. She indicated that getting them in was not so hard if you knew the criteria and worked on those specific points, but setting them up to fail was an issue. Indeed, in her industry there is an association, which holds up the highest ethical standards. Not all those in her field are of the same ethical standpoint.

The reason I bring this up is partly in defense, you see if we allow members to join our Think Tank who cannot handle it, then this degrades our Think Tank, it limits our ability to do things and solve real problems. Recently, a spiritual lady from Berkeley, CA, who perhaps describes herself as an academic attempted to join our Online Think Tank. After a few emails back and forth, we decided that she simply was not cut out for it.

Thus, we decided not to send her the application, later when she emailed us with a nasty note, we realized that it is a good thing we did not send her the application or allow her to get to second base in the strenuous application process. Had we known of her attitude the prior or the vindictive personal attacks, obviously she would not have qualified or wasted our time corresponding in the first place.

Why is this story important to you?

Well, simple, you see if you want to join a Think Tank, then you need to be fully engaged and intellectually and emotionally capable. You have to understand that Think Tanks are busy, very busy and we do not have time to play games. The average Think Tank only choose one in 250 to be admitted, unfortunately ours is more like 750. But you know what - in the end Darwin was right - the Strong Survive. Sincerely, Lance.
